The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) on Thursday formally retired former Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun ending his career in the force.

The ceremony was held on Thursday in Abuja and attended by senior officers and family members, including his wife Elizabeth Egbetokun.

Speaking at the event, ex-IGP Egbetokun said serving as IGP was one of the highest privileges of his life.

He noted that during his tenure, the police expanded operational capabilities, strengthened investigative functions and upgraded the cybercrime section.

Egbetokun was appointed Inspector-General by President Bola Tinubu in 2023, succeeding Usman Baba, who served under late former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Upon his appointment, he pledged to tackle criminal activities across the country.

Born in September 1964, Egbetokun hails from Egbado South Local Government Area of Ogun State.

He joined the police as a cadet Assistant Superintendent on March 3, 1990.

The latter part of his tenure drew attention because he remained in office beyond the mandatory retirement age of 60 and 35 years of service under Section 18(8) of the Police Act 2020.

The police maintained that he was completing the four-year term specified in his appointment letter.

In July 2024, the National Assembly amended the Police Act to allow IGPs to serve the full term stated in their letters of appointment.

Kayode Egbetokun resigned in February citing family considerations.

Following his resignation, Tinubu appointed Assistant Inspector-General Tunji Disu as acting IGP.

Disu was sworn in as Inspector-General on March 4 at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
