Northern Writers Forum to host virtual book reading with teen author Abubakar Auwal

The Northern Writers Forum (NWF) has announced a virtual book reading event featuring teen author Abubakar Auwal, scheduled to hold on February 28 online.

Auwal will read excerpts from his latest work, titled ‘Portrait of Broken Metaphors’, followed by a critical discussion examining contemporary writing, artistic expression, and the underlying themes of the book. “The event is conceptualized as a reflective literary experience,” said NWF.

The session will also allow participants to engage with the author on the ideas that shaped the book and the broader context of modern literary expression.

Abubakar Auwal is a recognised young writer with several awards to his name. He won the 2024 Arting Arena Poetry Chapbook Contest for Portraits of Broken Metaphors, and was a runner up in the Nigeria Prize for Teen Authors (2024) for his work Portraits of Gods As Metaphors. He also won the 2023 Splendors of Dawn Poetry and Short Story Competition. Auwal serves as the Editor in Chief of New Voices Magazine.

The Northern Writers Forum brings together writers, poets and literary practitioners from northern Nigeria. Its programmes aim to create spaces for discussion, mentorship and the celebration of regional literary work.

Organisers said the virtual format will allow writers, students and literature enthusiasts from across Nigeria and beyond to take part in the reading and discussion.

Literary events such as this reflect a wider effort to support writing and publishing in northern Nigeria. The region is home to platforms that promote literature and the arts, including the Kaduna Book and Arts Festival, which has provided a forum for authors and creatives since 2017.
