Gospel artiste Gaise Baba has opened up about his personal struggles, including his past addiction to pornography, during an interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo.
The singer, whose real name is Akinade Ibuoye, revealed that he got addicted to porn despite signing a “covenant of purity” in his teenage years.
“Yes, I married as a virgin. I and my wife. It took more time, sir, before we find the way,” he said.
“I was 15 when I started watching bad things. Now, there’s something you call covenant of purity… I just scribble something. I sign it, go to meet the pastor. I’m like, my covenant of purity. In fact, it was shortly after that I got addicted to porn. I knew that under the right temperature and pressure any man can fall.”
The 39-year-old, who is known for blending gospel with afrobeat, also spoke about how his biggest song ‘No Turning Back II’ featuring Lawrence Oyor gained attention shortly after the death of his mother.
“This season everybody’s talking about kicked off like two weeks after my mom passed. Fame came at a point that I was no longer looking for it,” he said.
Gaise Baba has often been in the spotlight for his unconventional appearance and sound, which includes tinted hair and urban style. Speaking about criticisms from some religious quarters, he said:
“People are looking on the outside, looking at the tinted hair, do you know my consecration… this is because there is a new generation I am connecting with. I am as deep, as anointed, as called and sent as any father of faith.”
Born in Ile-Ife, Osun State, with roots in Okemesi-Ekiti, Gaise Baba studied Economics at Obafemi Awolowo University. He later took music business courses at Berklee College of Music in the US.
Since releasing his debut album in 2011, the singer has performed internationally, including concerts in Kigali, London and several cities in the UK. He also runs youth-oriented initiatives such as LightOut and the Aramanda Festival aimed at using gospel music to impact culture.
Gaise Baba got married to Funto Ibuoye, founder of The Beautified Network, in 2015. They have children together.
