Nigerians lack empathy, Toyin Lawani reacts to death of Phyna’s sister Ruth

Fashion designer Toyin Lawani, has called out Nigerians for what she described as performative grief over the death of Ruth, the sister of former Big Brother Naija housemate, Phyna, who died on Sunday.

Following the news, Toyin took to her Instagram page on Monday to express her dismay, stating she hoped the reports weren’t true. She questioned if Nigerians were now satisfied, pointing out that during Phyna’s desperate calls for help, many online users chose to mock and criticise her instead of offering support.

The celebrity stylist criticised the general lack of empathy and emotional intelligence among Nigerians, emphasising that this is precisely why many individuals choose to suffer in silence. She noted that when people genuinely need help, they are met with ridicule, yet after tragedy strikes, condolences flood in.

“I hope this is not true,
But if it is, I hope you lots are happy now and can finally rest.
When Phyna was busy crying and screaming out asking for help,
Half of y’all kept dragging her for silly reasons that had nothing to do with her sister’s life.
Nigerians lack empathy and emotional intelligence.
You all still wonder why some people don’t bother sharing their pain and illness on this platform — but the RIPs will always outnumber the help. SMH.”

Ruth, who was hit by a Dangote truck on August 13, died on Sunday, at around 6:30 p.m.

Phyna confirmed the tragic loss and alongside her family, requested privacy during their time of mourning. She assured the public that funeral arrangements would be shared in due course.
