Nigeria bow out after tense shootout loss to Morocco

Nigeria’s Super Eagles have been eliminated from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations following a 4-2 penalty shootout defeat to Morocco after a goalless draw in their semi-final clash in Rabat.

The match at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium ended in a 0-0 draw after 90 minutes and extra time, with neither team able to find a breakthrough.

Nigeria struggled to create clear chances, while Morocco also failed to capitalise on their opportunities, despite enjoying more possession.

Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali produced several saves during regulation time and extra time to keep Nigeria in the contest.

At the other end, Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou denied Nigeria’s efforts when required.

The tie was decided on penalties, where Morocco converted four kicks.

Nigeria scored two, with Samuel Chukwueze and Bruno Onyemaechi missing their attempts.

Bounou saved two penalties to send the host nation into the final.

Nigeria had to cope without suspended midfielder and captain Wilfred Ndidi, with Raphael Onyedika starting in midfield before being substituted in the second half.

Victor Osimhen captained the Super Eagles but was later replaced during extra time.

Morocco will now face Senegal in the final of the tournament.
