NFVCB approves 102 films, plans action against unclassified YouTube releases

National Film and Video Censors Board NFVCB Shaibu Husseini

The National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) says it approved 102 films for distribution and exhibition in January as part of its mandate to regulate and classify film and video content.

According to a press release signed by the director of corporate affairs, Ogbonna Onwumere, the figure represents an increase of 161.5 per cent compared to the 39 films classified in December 2025.

A breakdown by language shows that 86 of the approved films were in English, eight in Igbo, three in Yoruba, three in Hausa and two in Hindi. The board said the distribution reflects the continued dominance of English language productions in the Nigerian film market while also showing contributions from indigenous Nigerian languages and foreign content.

The classification ratings show that three films were rated G for general viewing, four were rated PG, four received a 12A rating, 64 were rated 15 and 27 were rated 18.

The board noted that the number of films in the 15 and 18 categories highlights its efforts to ensure age appropriate content and protect younger audiences from potentially harmful material.

NFVCB also reiterated its commitment to enforcing classification requirements for films distributed online, particularly on YouTube.

“We shall commence the issuance of take down order on films not classified by the board. The implication of the demand notice is that all films not classified on the channel will also be taken down”.

The NFVCB is the regulatory body established by Act No. 85 of 1993 to oversee the film and video industry in Nigeria. It is responsible for classifying films and video works, registering film outlets and licensing exhibitors across the country. The board also regulates content to ensure it meets age appropriate standards.

NFVCB operates under the Federal Ministry of Arts, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy. The director general of the board is Shaibu Husseini, a film critic and culture administrator.
