Nigeria’s cinema industry is set for a technological boost following a partnership between the Nigerian Film Corporation (NFC) and PlotWeaver, a company providing artificial intelligence–based storytelling tools.
The two organisations signed a Memorandum of Understanding in Abuja on Monday. The NFC described the collaboration as “strategic, timely, innovative and will transform the storytelling capabilities” of Nigerian filmmakers.
Brian Etuk, NFC’s Director of Public Affairs, said the partnership aligns with the Federal Government’s plans to grow Nigeria’s creative industry through innovation. He added that the project will help filmmakers use “innovative storytelling opportunities powered by Artificial Intelligence” and make the processes for developing films smoother across the country.
The AI tools will be available across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones and are expected to benefit established filmmakers, students in creative arts, emerging talents, and film training institutions.
Dr Ali Nuhu, Managing Director of the NFC, described the initiative as a key step for the industry. He said: “This partnership marks a pivotal shift towards a future where cultural storytelling meets cutting‑edge technology. This is not just about software; it is about sovereignty in storytelling and equipping creatives with the power to tell their stories with accuracy and dignity that resonate beyond Nigeria’s borders.”
Oluwole Fagbohun, PlotWeaver’s founder and chief executive officer, said the project will unfold over the next three years, including building the framework, providing training, and implementing capacity-building programs. The platform aims to support filmmakers in script development, character design, and market insights using artificial intelligence.
PlotWeaver has previously collaborated with other Nigerian creative initiatives, including a 2025 youth storytelling competition launched with the Lagos State Film and Video Censors Board for students aged 13 to 20.
