The remains of veteran journalist and co-founder of Newswatch magazine Yakubu Mohammed were buried on Thursday in Ologba, Anyigba, Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State.
The burial was conducted according to Islamic rites and presided over by the Chief Imam, Alhaji Musa, alongside the Imam of Ologba II, Dauda Omeje.
The funeral was attended by religious and traditional leaders, family members and journalists.
In his sermon, Imam Musa urged people to prepare for death and live in service to others.
“All of us must prepare for death because it is a necessary end for all of mankind. We will all taste death one day. How we prepare for it matters. We must live in peace with one another and live a life of service to humanity, like our brother, Mohammed,” he said.
The Imam said Mohammed remained committed to his faith and community throughout his life.
“As a devoted Muslim, he never compromised his religion. He was committed to the development of our land,” he said.
A first cousin of the deceased, Joshua Edegbo, also said Mohammed was committed to the development of his community.
“As a committed Muslim, he never deviated from his faith. He never mixed his religion with anything, even when he briefly went into politics. I am not surprised by the turnout of people who came to pay their last respects,” Mr Edegbo said.
Yakubu Mohammed died on January 14 at the age of 75.
He was born on April 4, 1950.
He attended St. Joseph’s Primary School, Anyigba and Government Secondary School, Okene.
He later studied at the University of Lagos and the Glasgow College of Technology in Scotland.
Mohammed was a gubernatorial aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during the 2011 Kogi State election.
