Socialite and nightclub owner, Mike Nwogu, better known as Pretty Mike, has been arrested alongside over 100 others following a midnight raid by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) at Proxy Night Club, Victoria Island, Lagos.
NDLEA spokesman Femi Babafemi confirmed the operation in a statement on Sunday, saying it followed credible intelligence about a drug party being organised at the club located on Akin Adesola Street.
According to the agency, undercover officers monitored the event from around 11 p.m. on Saturday before storming the venue around 3 a.m. on Sunday. Various quantities of cannabis, popularly called “Loud,” and nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, were recovered from the scene.
“All suspects, including the club owner, have been taken into custody for further investigation,” Babafemi said.
The NDLEA explained that the Lagos raid was part of a wider operation targeting drug trafficking networks across the country. In a related statement, the agency announced the interception of 70 parcels of cocaine concealed in containers of cocoa butter body cream at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, bound for London.
A cargo agent, Lawal Olakunle and two others, Ogunmuyide Taiwo Deborah and Mutiu Adebayo Adebiyi, CEO of a travel agency, were arrested in connection with the drug shipment. The agency also nabbed a Lesotho national at Enugu Airport with methamphetamine hidden in herbal tea packs and arrested another suspect in Kwara with 21,950 tramadol capsules stuffed inside a water heater.
NDLEA chairman Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.) commended the agency’s commands for their coordination, reiterating that the fight against drugs must combine enforcement with community education.
Pretty Mike is yet to make a public statement as of the time of filing this report.
