Rapper Zlatan Ibile has said his parents were doubtful about the source of his wealth after he gifted them a house in Lekki, Lagos, in 2019.
Speaking on the YACN podcast, the ‘Zanku’ crooner said his parents questioned whether his earnings from music alone could fund such a purchase.
According to him, they asked for time to pray and look into the situation, expressing concern about possible involvement in illegal activities.
“When I blew up in 2019, I bought my first house in Lekki and decided to gift it to my parents. I called them on the phone and asked them to come and they were like, ‘A house? That’s not possible. Are you doing something else apart from music? How did you buy a house worth millions in the space of one year?’,” he recalled.
Zlatan said he felt hurt by their reaction, noting that he had made them a priority.
To address their concerns, he explained that he showed them proof of his income, including his bank statement.
Zlatan rose to prominence in 2018 with his breakout single ‘Zanku (Leg Work),’ which gained wide popularity and inspired a dance style that spread across Nigeria. He later worked with artistes such as Davido, Burna Boy and Olamide.
