The first daughter of gospel singer Bunmi Akinnaanu, popularly known as Omije Ojumi, spoke emotionally about her family’s struggles at the service of songs held in her mother’s honour in Lagos on Wednesday.
Jomiloju described her mother as a committed parent who raised her children despite challenges in her marriage, including the prolonged absence of their father. According to her, Omije Ojumi dedicated her life to ensuring they grew into responsible adults.
“She was always there for us, even when our father wasn’t,” she said. “Her focus was to make sure we turned out responsible and did better than she did in her marital journey.”
She said her mother prioritised their education and enrolled them in the best schools she could afford to secure their future.
In an emotional moment, Jomiloju made a public promise to care for her younger brother and guide him to become the kind of responsible and prayerful man their mother hoped he would be.
“I promised my mum that I will take care of my younger brother,” she said. “He will be the prayer warrior and responsible son she wanted him to be, not like…”
At the service, the family also addressed controversies surrounding the burial arrangements of the late singer. Speaking on behalf of the family, Femi Eretan dismissed claims that the family begged for funds online and said the burial plans were handled independently.
He stated that the family decided to take full control of the arrangements in order to honour Omije Ojumi with dignity and peace, while appreciating those who supported them in prayers and goodwill.
Omije Ojumi died on January 12.
Friends, colleagues and fans have continued to pay tribute to her life and music, describing her as a devoted mother and passionate gospel minister whose impact will be remembered.
