Comedian Chukwuemeka Ejekwu, better known as Sabinus, has narrated how his father once disapproved of his decision to become a skit maker, saying the older man wanted him to pursue law.
The 30-year-old, in an interview with VJ Adams, said his father expected him to study law after sponsoring his education, but things changed when he failed to secure admission into the course.
“At first, my dad never wanted me to be what I am today, he wanted me to be a lawyer. I tried my best, but I couldn’t secure a law admission. So, I had to settle for Linguistics and Communication Studies at Uniport,” he said.
Sabinus added that he discovered skit-making while on campus.
“It was on campus that I saw skit making and I decided to try it out. Money wasn’t coming,” he said.
According to him, his father did not know he was doing comedy until after he graduated and began appearing on promotional posters.
“A year after my graduation, he started hearing and seeing my pictures promoting comedy shows. And when he asked my sisters, they told him what I was doing. That was when wahala started,” he said.
“Which comedy? Stupid business. Look at the boy I sent to become a lawyer,” he quoted his father as saying.
Sabinus, who began skit-making in 2015 and relocated from Port Harcourt to Lagos in 2019 to pursue entertainment fully, has since grown into one of Nigeria’s biggest online comedians. His rise earned him the AMVCA award for Best Online Social Content Creator in 2022 and several brand endorsement deals.
He said his father now accepts his career path after witnessing his success.
