Singer Seyi Shay has opened up about why she is not married to the father of her daughter.
Speaking on the WithChude podcast with Chude Jideonwo, the 39-year-old said although she and her baby’s father are not married, they remain good friends and co-parent their daughter peacefully.
“We’re not married. It’s a technical issue but because he’s not here, I don’t want to speak too much because I’ve not discussed with him about how he might feel,” she said.
“He’s someone that is very special to me and this is my daughter’s father. But he’s great, he’s cool, he’s around, he’s in the UK at the moment. He’s also in the music industry, on the corporate side of things. And we just work well together, raising our child. We’re great friends.”
Seyi Shay added that her daughter’s father is Nigerian, saying, “Her dad is Nigerian, from Nigeria. And we’re really brilliant friends now, and we co-parent really well.”
The ‘Right Now’ singer welcomed her daughter in 2022. That same year, she revealed that she was engaged but refused to disclose the identity of her partner.
“Some guy gave it to me and said, ‘Would you marry me?’ It’s really diamonds. Diamonds are forever,” she said at the time. “I’d already evolved. I was already glowing before I met the guy. He just added to the glow.”
Born Deborah Joshua, Seyi Shay began her career in the UK as part of the girl group “From Above” before launching her solo career in Nigeria.
Her debut album Seyi or Shay was released in 2015, followed by Big Girl in 2021, a project that reflected her growth and maturity.
In recent interviews, Seyi Shay has spoken about facing criticism and pressure to marry, have children and conform to societal expectations.
