Director of mobilisation of the Obidient Movement Morris Monye has resigned from his position.
The movement is made up of supporters of Peter Obi, the Labour Party (LP) candidate in the 2023 presidential election, who has declared his interest in the 2027 election.
Mr Monye announced his resignation on Thursday through a post on his X handle, stating that he had sent a copy of his resignation letter to Mr Obi and the movement’s National Coordinator, Yunusa Tanko.
He said, “Almost a year down the line, most of our short, medium, and long-term plans have not been met. I won’t be part of optics and no work.”
He cited the Labour Party’s performance in the 8 November Anambra Governorship Election as a reason for his resignation.
INEC declared Charles Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance the winner with 422,664 votes, while the LP candidate, George Moghalu, came fourth with 10,576 votes.
The LP also lost in Obi’s polling unit to the APC, despite his campaign support for the party candidate.
Monye said he and his business had faced constant harassment from “sympathisers and instruments of this government” and that the situation had affected him and his family.
He claimed to have spent approximately N40 million from his private account to fund Obidient events, trips, committees and mobilisation, without receiving support from the LP national leadership, including Peter Obi.
He stated, “No money was given to the Directorate of Mobilisation. There’s no bank account even for the directorate. In fact, Mr Peter Obi has never asked what we are doing in mobilisation. No communication, nothing.”
He added that all current directorates were using personal funds and that the arrangement was not sustainable.
He said he would continue to support the Obidient Movement but would no longer be at the “forefront.”
Morris Monye also advised Obi to engage a media team and political consultants to coordinate polling units, saying, “Polling unit agents’ mobilisation is key. That must be happening quickly. The lapse was shown again in the Anambra election.”
He concluded, “Please and please. I resigned as Director of Mobilization not the movement. I am always Obidient at heart.”
