Minister of information and national orientation Mohammed Idris has congratulated Danlami Nmodu on his election as president of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP).

Mr Nmodu, publisher of Newsdiary Online, was elected after a keenly contested election held in Lagos.

In a statement issued on Monday by his media aide, Rabiu Ibrahim, the minister described Nmodu as a journalist with years of experience and urged him to promote unity and inclusiveness within the Guild.

“As I congratulate Nmodu, it pleases me to urge him to run an inclusive leadership that guarantees the participation of all GOCOP members in sustaining the collective aspirations of the Guild,” the minister said.

Mr Idris also commended the immediate past president, Maureen Chigbo of RealNews Online, for her role in leading the Guild and contributing to its growth.

He advised the new GOCOP leadership to uphold the credibility of journalism by addressing fake news, misinformation and disinformation.

The minister called for collaboration between GOCOP and the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation to advance media and information literacy in the country.

“I am trusting Mr Nmodu, who has built a distinguished career in journalism molded in integrity, accountability, courage, and resilience, also to bring the same to bear in collaborating with the government to uphold the values of media fidelity and literacy, especially in the fluid digital media space,” he concluded.
