Singer Adekunle Gold has stirred reactions online after rewarding several first-class graduates with N250,000 each.
The 37-year-old announced the initiative in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday.
He wrote:
“If you graduated with First class, post your transcripts.”
Shortly after the post went viral, dozens of graduates responded by uploading their transcripts and certificates showing they finished with first-class honours. Adekunle Gold then began selecting some of the respondents and gifting them N250k each.
One of the recipients shared her experience online, saying she had only N1,700 left in her account when the singer reached out to her.
While many praised Adekunle Gold’s gesture as a way to encourage academic excellence, others criticised the move for focusing only on first-class graduates.
A user commented:
“So na only first-class students dey listen to your songs?”
Another added:
“You for create form instead of using this your timeline wey full already.”
Some also raised concerns about fraudsters using the transcripts as material for scams.
The singer, whose name is Adekunle Kosoko, is known for supporting youth empowerment.
In 2022, he launched the 5 Star Care Programme through his foundation to help people with sickle cell disease, a condition he has openly spoken about living with.
This is not the first time an entertainer’s giveaway has sparked online debate. Earlier in July, Peller a content creator sparked backlash after asking master’s degree holders to apply for a cameraman role.
Adekunle Gold is married to singer Simi, and they have a daughter together.
The father of one has not responded to the backlash, but his action has continued to trend on social media.
