The Musical Copyright Society of Nigeria (MCSN), in collaboration with the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC), is organising a training session aimed at educating members of the Deejays Association of Nigeria (DJAN) on copyright laws.
The session, titled “Training in copyright laws and enforcement strategies,” is scheduled to take place next week Wednesday at the Lagos Airport Hotel.
This event is specially tailored for DJs, with the goal of equipping them with essential knowledge about the proper use of musical works and their legal responsibilities under the Nigerian Copyright Act of 2022.
The session will also highlight the consequences of copyright infringement, stressing the importance of DJs respecting intellectual property rights.
In a statement, MCSN underscored the importance of the training, emphasising that the unauthorised use of copyrighted music is now classified as a criminal offense under the new Act.
The society aims to sensitise DJs about the critical role they play in the music and entertainment industry, where music is the backbone of their trade.
As major players in the entertainment ecosystem, DJs must understand that their work relies heavily on the intellectual property of musicians and creators.
“The goal is not only to enforce compliance but to build a culture of respect, partnership, and sustainability between DJs and music creators,” said a spokesman for MCSN.
The training will guide DJs on how respecting copyright laws ensures that artists and creators receive the rightful compensation for their creativity and labor.
“The goal is not only to enforce compliance but also to foster a culture of respect, partnership, and sustainability between DJs and music creators,” a spokesman for MCSN emphasised.
The event will feature seasoned legal and copyright experts, including representatives from the NCC, who will walk participants through the provisions of the new copyright Act. They will also address any questions and offer practical guidance on the best practices for DJs moving forward.
