Minister of state for defence Bello Matawalle has increased political engagements in Kano as part of efforts to build support for President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 election.

Kano is seen as a key state in the North West and a major factor in national elections. Matawalle’s recent visit focused on strengthening party structures, reconciling members and expanding grassroots support within the All Progressives Congress (APC).

His activities come amid shifts in the state’s political space, including developments involving former governorship candidate Nasir Yusuf Gawuna. Observers say the engagements are aimed at maintaining unity within the party and ensuring coordination ahead of future elections.

At the grassroots level, Matawalle is said to be promoting mobilisation through stakeholder meetings and outreach programmes across local government areas and wards. The efforts are designed to increase the party’s presence and support base.

The minister has also been linked to empowerment activities involving political mobilisers such as Aminu Warkal, which align with the party’s strategy to deepen voter engagement.

In addition, his outreach has included reconciliation moves within the party. One such development is the reported return of a member identified as London, who had earlier distanced herself from the party but is said to have rejoined after engagements.

Another development involved Dan Baban Gawuna, who was recently seen in Kano with Aminu Kilishi during a visit that included consultations with Matawalle. Discussions were said to focus on unity and renewed support for the party.

Political observers say the approach reflects a strategy centred on consolidation, reconciliation and sustained engagement rather than internal division.

With the 2027 elections approaching, Kano is expected to remain a key battleground. Matawalle’s activities are seen as part of the party’s wider efforts to strengthen its position through grassroots mobilisation and internal cohesion.
