The leadership of markets across Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, has ordered the closure of all markets and shops on Monday in honour of the Awujale and paramount ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, who died on Sunday at the age of 91.
The decision was taken during an emergency meeting of the market leaders’ council on Sunday, shortly after the announcement of the monarch’s death.
The move, according to stakeholders, is a mark of deep respect for the highly revered traditional ruler.
A resident of Ijebu-Ode and close ally of the Ajalorun of Ijebu-Ife, Abiodun Adejare, confirmed the development.
“Markets in Ijebu-Ode will be shut today as a mark of respect to our great king, who passed away on Sunday. May his soul rest in peace,” Mr Adejare said.
Oba Adetona, one of Nigeria’s longest-reigning traditional rulers, reportedly died at his residence in the GRA area of Ijebu-Ode on Sunday evening.
His death came just hours after the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari in a UK hospital, marking a double loss for the nation.
Governor of Ogun State, Dapo Abiodun, confirmed the monarch’s death in an official statement, describing it as the end of a great era.
“It is with profound sadness that I announce the passing of His Royal Majesty, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the revered Awujale of Ijebuland,” the governor said.
“Oba Adetona joined his ancestors today, July 13, 2025, at the age of 91, leaving behind a remarkable legacy that has significantly shaped Ijebuland, Ogun State and Nigeria in general.”
Governor Abiodun noted that Oba Adetona’s reign, which began in 1960, ushered in a transformative period for Ijebuland, marked by cultural revival and bold leadership.
Meanwhile, the monarch will be buried on Monday at 4 pm at Ogbagba Court, Igbeba, in Ijebu-Ode.
