The Kaduna State Police Command has confirmed that the man who breached security during President Bola Tinubu’s official visit to the state has a history of psychiatric illness.

The individual, identified as Umar Mohammed from Anguwan Muazu in Kaduna, disrupted proceedings on Thursday during the commissioning of projects at Murtala Mohammed Square, where President Tinubu was delivering a speech.

In a statement released on Friday, the Command’s spokesman DSP Mansir Hassan explained that Umar had been screened and allowed into the venue as a supporter of the All Progressives Congress (APC). He wore a campaign T-shirt and carried banners bearing the images of President Tinubu and Governor Uba Sani, just like other attendees.

The police said the disruption occurred when Umar, overwhelmed by excitement, breached the security line and attempted to move closer to the President. He was immediately intercepted and arrested by the security team.

According to DSP Hassan, medical records and investigations showed that Umar was born with psychiatric disorders. The command urged members of the public to avoid politicising the incident.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that Umar Mohammed breached the protocol by barging into the restricted perimeter fence and jumping into the arena out of curiosity and excitement to catch a closer glimpse of the President. He acted out of anxiety and emotional excitement, expressing a long-held desire to meet with the Governor and the President.

“The individual in question is one Umar Mohammed, a native of Anguwan muazu in Kaduna. He was born with psychiatric disorders he is of unsound mind. He is an ardent supporter of Mr. President and the Governor according to our findings.

“Nevertheless he was screened and admitted into the stadium as an APC supporter, wearing the standard campaign T-shirt and carrying banners bearing the images of the President and the Governor, like every other supporter screened and admitted into the Stadium by the event screening team,” the police stated.

Kaduna State Commissioner of Police, Rabiu Muhammad, also cautioned against the spread of misinformation, assuring that the matter would be further investigated.

“It is important to note that the viral video was doctored and misrepresented with the intent to distort the true nature of the incident,” he said

The commotion happened during President Tinubu’s visit to commission several landmark projects initiated by Governor Uba Sani, including a 300-bed specialist hospital and 100 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses.

During the incident, President Tinubu was seen briefly startled as the man approached, but he quickly regained composure and said, “Leave him alone,” before continuing his speech. Governor Sani also signalled to security operatives to calm the situation.
