Former attorney general of the federation and minister of justice Abubakar Malami has confirmed honouring an invitation by the Department of State Services (DSS) over the attack on his convoy in Kebbi State, coming weeks after governor Nasir Idris denied allegations linking him to political thugs and mercenaries.
In a statement posted on his social media handle on Monday, Mr Malami said the DSS invitation was linked to ongoing investigations arising from petitions, including one he submitted over threats to his life.
“I can confirm that I have been invited by the Department of State Services to support investigation over the attack on my person and convoy in Kebbi State on the 1st of September, 2025,” Malami stated.
He alleged that the petition was instigated by “opposition high-profile political elements” in Kebbi State, but expressed confidence in the DSS, commending the agency for what he described as professionalism in handling the inquiry.
“I must commend the DSS for the professional and transparent manner in which they have conducted their inquiry. I was treated with dignity and respect, and I remain committed to cooperating fully with the Department to ensure that their investigation is concluded successfully,” he added.
Malami’s convoy was attacked in Birnin Kebbi earlier this month.
He said 10 vehicles were vandalised and several of his supporters were injured.
In a petition dated September 10, the former minister accused political actors in the state of importing foreign mercenaries from Niger Republic and arming them through illegal channels.
He urged security agencies to investigate the matter, describing it as a national security concern.
Governor Nasir Idris denied the allegations, saying Malami’s claims were false and capable of undermining peace in the state.
In a statement signed by his media adviser, Yahya Sarki, the governor said his administration had supported security agencies with vehicles, motorcycles, communication gadgets and operational allowances, as well as facilitated armoured vehicles and aerial support from the Nigerian Air Force.
Mr Sarki further alleged that Malami brought political thugs into Kebbi during a condolence visit, claiming they caused destruction in the state capital.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kebbi also distanced itself from the incident, with spokesman Isa Assalafy saying the party had no reason to disrupt peace ahead of the 2027 elections.
