Former chairman of the defunct Pension Reform Task Force Abdulrasheed Maina has been hospitalised in Abuja after slumping on Tuesday while attempting to access his office.
The incident was disclosed in a statement issued on Wednesday by his media assistant, Emmanuel Ekwe, who said it followed complications from an untreated knee injury.
According to the statement, the injury caused Mr Maina to lose his balance and fall, hitting his head on a staircase before medical personnel attended to him.
“Dr Abdulrasheed Maina, former chairman of the Pension Reform Task Team, slumped on the evening of Tuesday, February 3, 2026, while attempting to access his office premises,” Mr Ekwe said.
“The incident followed complications from an untreated knee injury, which caused him to lose balance and fall, resulting in his head hitting the staircase. Medical personnel present administered first aid before rushing him to a private hospital in Abuja.”
Ekwe added that Maina is currently receiving medical care and remains under observation, noting that doctors advised that arrangements for an air ambulance evacuation be considered if his condition does not stabilise.
He said the family appealed to the public for privacy and prayers, adding that further updates would be provided as developments unfold.
Maina is known for his role as head of the Presidential Task Force on Pension Reforms and the corruption case that followed.
In November 2021, a Federal High Court in Abuja convicted him on money laundering charges involving N2.1 billion linked to pension funds and sentenced him to eight years’ imprisonment.
The Court of Appeal upheld the conviction and sentence in May 2023, affirming the forfeiture of assets linked to the case.
Maina was released from the Kuje Correctional Centre on February 25, 2025, after serving part of his sentence. The Nigerian Correctional Service said his release followed statutory remission for good conduct, with the sentence running from his arrest in October 2019.
His hospitalisation comes days after the Nigerian Bar Association ordered the withdrawal of the Patron title conferred on him by the NBA Garki Branch in Abuja.
The NBA said the appointment of Maina undermined the legal profession, adding that disciplinary action would be taken against officials involved in the decision.
