Actress Lilian Afegbai, widely known as Lily Afe, has apologised to the organisers of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) after her posts online following her exclusion from the 12th edition nomination list.
In a post on her X page on Saturday, Lilian said her apology should have come sooner and that her earlier tweet should not have been made public.
She wrote: “This apology should have come earlier, That tweet should not have happened. No excuse. It was disrespectful to AMVCA, the nominees, my To Kill A Monkey family, and all of you who have supported me.”
The actress added: “Honestly, I was disappointed. But that’s not an excuse for how I responded.”
She said her reaction came from a place of hurt and entitlement and was out of character, and asked fans to “give me a chance to be better.”
Lilian had drawn attention online last week after the AMVCA nomination list was released. She was not included among the nominees for best supporting actress despite praise for her performance as Idia in the Netflix series To Kill a Monkey.
Shortly after the list was announced, she posted “Amvca SMH” on X and later wrote: “I always choose to believe everything happens for a reason. I don’t need a nomination for validation…. The truth is clear nobody trended like IDIA from TKAM last year.”
She ended that post with: “You guys can eat your award.”
To Kill a Monkey, directed by Kemi Adetiba, has been among the most talked-about Nigerian productions of the past year. It received eight nominations at this year’s AMVCA, trailing only a few other films and series on the list.
