Filmmaker and author Laju Iren has recorded a strong cinema debut with Onobiren: A Woman’s Story, which grossed N30.1 million in its first three days in cinemas.

According to figures shared by distribution group FilmOne Entertainment, the film made the amount across cinemas in Nigeria and Ghana during its opening weekend from March 6 to 8. It emerged as the highest-grossing title in Nigerian cinemas during the period, outperforming both Nollywood and international releases.

The performance marks Iren’s first cinema release as an executive producer, positioning the project as a notable entry into the theatrical market.

The release was timed to coincide with Women’s Month, with the story centred on themes of identity, resilience and female solidarity.

Following the announcement of the box office result, Iren reacted on social media, thanking audiences for their support.

She wrote: “This is the doing of the Lord! Thank you West Africa! Thank you Nigeria! Highest grossing film the weekend overall, whether Nollywood or Hollywood. Thank you all for showing up! This is just the beginning. Many more milestones to reach and records to break! Onobiren is showing in all cinemas nationwide!”

Onobiren: A Woman’s Story opened simultaneously in cinemas in Nigeria and Ghana, expanding its reach to audiences across West Africa.

The film follows the journey of Roli, a young woman who moves from Warri to Lagos. What begins as a migration story develops into an exploration of survival, purpose and self discovery, highlighting women supporting one another through social and economic challenges.

The cast includes Ruby Akubueze, Bisola Aiyeola, Deyemi Okanlawon, Patience Ozokwor, Norbert Young and Desmond Bryce. The project was produced by Africa No Filter, Creative Economy Practice and Laju Iren Films.
