Filmmaker and author Laju Iren has announced that her movie Onobiren: A Woman’s Story has grossed N66.1 million at the box office since it opened in cinemas.

Taking to her Instagram page on Monday, Iren shared a poster of the film with the milestone it has reached. She wrote, “In Roli’s words: ‘I work hard. But God has helped me. People have helped me.’”

She added, “Onobiren is the highest grossing film in West Africa for the second weekend in a row. Grateful to God and to you all for loving our most beautiful film.”

Iren continued, “This is just the beginning, but what a beautiful beginning it is! Up next, do I say 500m or 10 billion! Have you seen it yet? Convince someone in the comments why this is so well deserved! Onobiren is showing in cinemas nationwide and select cinemas in Ghana!”

Onobiren: A Woman’s Story opened in cinemas across Nigeria and Ghana on March 6. The film tells the story of Roli, a young woman from the riverine Itsekiri communities of Warri in Delta State who leaves home for Lagos and confronts cultural expectations and the challenges of life in the city.

The movie stars Ruby Akubueze in the lead role, with Bisola Aiyeola, Patience Ozokwor, Deyemi Okanlawon, Norbert Young, Desmond Bryce and Temitope Aje in supporting roles. It is written and produced by Laju Iren through her production company, Laju Iren Films and distributed by FilmOne Entertainment.

Onobiren: A Woman’s Story is Iren’s first feature film created specifically for theatrical release. Earlier works by the filmmaker, such as Loving Amanda and Last to Marry, were released mainly online.
