Lagos State Police Command has launched an investigation into a video showing a uniformed officer being attacked by a crowd over an allegation of theft.

The footage, which circulated on Wednesday, shows the officer seated on the ground with blood around his mouth as onlookers record the incident on their phones.

The officer, still in uniform, was seen pleading for assistance while the crowd accused him of stealing.

Another officer is visible in the video, pushing through the crowd in an effort to intervene, but the mob continued chanting “Ole!” (Thief) in Yoruba.

Commercial vehicles and tricycles moved slowly around the scene and a yellow bus marked “Ayedade” was also in view, suggesting the incident occurred in a busy area of Lagos.

Lagos State Police Command Spokesperson Abimbola Adebisi on Thursday, confirmed that the command is investigating the incident and verifying the officer’s identity.

On X, SP Adebisi wrote, “The command has seen the viral video. We are investigating to determine the full circumstances and confirm the identity of the officer. Updates will follow soon.”

The Nigerian Police Force has warned against mob justice, stating that allegations against civilians or security personnel must be addressed through official and lawful channels.
