Lagos State Police Command has begun an investigation into a police officer seen in a viral video attempting to arrest a bus conductor in the Ikorodu area of the state.
The video shows the officer in a camouflage uniform struggling with the conductor inside a bus as passengers shout for the officer to release him.
The conductor is seen partly undressed and heard crying, “Police, don kill me,” while some bystanders challenge the officer’s actions.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the command’s spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, said the incident followed an operation involving police personnel and officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority.
She said the driver of the bus blocked the road and disrupted traffic flow in the Ikorodu axis.
According to the statement, the conductor stripped himself during the arrest in an effort to escape and the video was recorded at that point.
SP Adebisi said the officer involved has been identified and is under investigation to determine the appropriateness of his conduct.
She added that the conductor has been contacted and is expected to appear before the Commissioner of Police on Monday.
The bus has been impounded and is in police custody.
Commissioner of Police Olohundare Jimoh urged residents to report any violation of their rights by police officers.
He warned that public dramatisation directed at the officer in the video is not acceptable under the law.
Commissioner Jimoh also reminded the public that resisting lawful arrest is a criminal offence.
The command said the findings of the investigation will be made public.
