Kunle Afolayan named Cinematic Icon of the Year at Africa Creative Choice Awards

Filmmaker Kunle Afolayan has been honoured with the Cinematic Icon of the Year award at the Africa Creative Choice Awards.

The ceremony held on Friday, September 5, at the British Council, Ikoyi, Lagos.

Celebrating the feat, the Aníkúlápó director shared pictures from the event on Instagram on Monday with the caption: “It’s another one🙏🏾🍻 Special thank you to the organizers of the The Africa Creative Choice Awards Which took place at the British Council, Ikoyi, Lagos on 5th of September 2025 @africa_creative_choice.”

The award recognised Afolayan’s contributions to African storytelling and cinematic excellence with films like The Figurine (2009), October 1 (2014) and Citation (2020).

Kunle, son of late filmmaker Adeyemi Afolayan (Ade Love), has remained one of Nollywood’s most consistent directors.

His Netflix titles Aníkúlápó and Ijogbon enjoyed global success, while his latest film Recall premiered at the Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF) in 2024 before opening in cinemas in April 2025.

He also recently launched the KAP Film Village & Resort in Oyo State, a creative hub that combines film, culture and tourism.
