Filmmaker Kunle Afolayan has released the official trailer for his upcoming movie, revealing for the first time its title: Anikulapo: The Ghoul Awakens.
He shared the trailer on Instagram on Monday with the caption, “OFFICIAL TRAILER
ANIKULAPO-The Ghoul Awakens
“Once power is awakened, it demands a price. From Oyo to foreign lands, love is tested, loyalties are shaken.
This season, survival is the real crown, and everything you think you know will be questioned.
“Anikulapo: The Ghoul Awakens arrives on January 30, only on @naijaonnetflix.”
The new film continues the Anikulapo story, expanding the world first introduced in Aníkúlápó, released on Netflix in 2022. The original movie, directed by Afolayan, tells the story of Saro, a cloth weaver who is mysteriously brought back to life after his death, setting off a chain of events driven by love, ambition and power.
Following the success of the film, the story was extended into a Netflix series titled Aníkúlápó: Rise of the Spectre, which premiered in 2024. The series followed Saro’s journey after his return from death, as he faced new consequences tied to his supernatural revival and the demands placed on him.
For Anikulapo: The Ghoul Awakens, Afolayan’s latest project brings back familiar faces and introduces new actors. Returning cast members include Sola Sobowale, Bimbo Ademoye, Aisha Lawal, Eyiyemi Afolayan and others from the Anikulapo universe.
New additions to the cast announced for this season include former Big Brother Naija housemate Okusaga Adeoluwa (Saga), Bukunmi Adeaga‑Ilori known as KieKie, Antar Laniyan, Saidi Balogun, Teniola Aladese and others. Ghanaian actress Fella Makafui has also joined the series, taking on a new character role for the expanded story.
Anikulapo: The Ghoul Awakens builds on both the original film and the follow up series, taking the story beyond familiar settings and deepening its focus on power, loyalty and survival.
The movie is scheduled for release on January 30 on Netflix.
