Filmmaker Kunle Afod has announced the death of veteran Yoruba actor Wole Olowomojuore, popularly known as Baba Gebu.
Kunle broke the news on Instagram on Wednesday, writing, “It saddens my heart as I announce the passing away of our great legend, a great actor who passed away this evening after a brief illness… BABA GEBU may your soul rest in peace….”
Baba Gebu, who was also a director, singer and broadcaster, was known for his decades-long contribution to Yoruba theatre and film. He directed notable works such as Anikura (1982) and Aare Agbaye (1983), earning respect as one of the pioneers of indigenous Yoruba cinema.
Before his death, the veteran had appeared in an emotional interview with Kunle Afod, where he spoke about losing his wife and how the experience changed his life.
“I lost my wife, and since then I’ve been trying to return to acting so I don’t fall into depression,” he said. “I just want to stay busy and avoid loneliness.”
The actor’s heartfelt confession, shared by Kunle on Facebook, showed his desire to return to active acting before his demise.
Although details about his age and the cause of death have not been made public, tributes have continued to pour in from fans and colleagues who described him as humble and dedicated to his craft.
Baba Gebu’s death adds to the growing list of veteran Yoruba actors who have died in recent months, leaving another void in the industry.
Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced by his family.
