Konga demands 60% royalty from Burna Boy over ‘Update’

Burna Boy

Singer Konga has said he deserves 60 percent of the earnings from a song by Burna Boy, claiming the Grammy winner sampled his work without permission.

Konga made the claim while speaking on the Hits Don’t Lie podcast, where he alleged that Burna Boy used elements of his music in the song Update but did not seek his consent.

He said Burna Boy had also ignored his earlier public appeal for engagement on the issue.

“If Toni Braxton is having 60% royalty of Last Last, why can’t he do the same thing to come and meet me first, talk to me?,” Konga queried.

The singer was referring to Burna Boy’s 2022 hit ‘Last Last’, which sampled a song by American singer Toni Braxton, reportedly earning her a share of the royalties.

Konga added that despite the situation, he has held back from taking legal action.

He said he stopped his lawyers from pursuing the matter because he appreciates Burna Boy’s music and is proud of his role in the global growth of African music.

The veteran also claimed that Burna Boy previously used his lyrics in the remix of ‘Sungba’ with Asake and incorporated parts of his style into ‘Update’.

He noted that after Burna Boy declined his request to feature on a remix of his song ‘Kabakaba’, he has decided to also sample Burna Boy’s work without permission.

Burna Boy is one of Africa’s most successful music exports, known for blending Afrobeats, reggae and pop. He won a Grammy award for his album Twice as Tall.

As of the time of this report, Burna Boy has not publicly responded to Konga’s latest demand.
