Reality TV star Terseer Waya, popularly known as Kiddwaya, has come under fire for soliciting public donations to his foundation in the wake of the recent massacre in Benue State.
The former Big Brother Naija housemate on Wednesday took to social media to announce a fundraiser for victims of the attack, where gunmen killed several people in Yelewata, Guma Local Government Area of Benue State.
“Let’s help the victims of the Benue massacre. Please donate, any amount can help. Click the link below to donate,” he wrote in a post.
Kiddwaya added in another tweet:
“The Kiddwaya Foundation will be working with credible charities to help those affected by this tragedy. The link will be live shortly.”
However, the move sparked outrage online, with many questioning why Kiddwaya, the son of billionaire businessman Terry Waya, was asking the public for money instead of personally funding the effort.
A user wrote:
“You that should be donating to help people you’re telling us to donate. Do you know how much beans is now? You and your father can’t contribute small abi?”
Another user said:
“If you want to help victims, do so quietly. Don’t come online to announce it as if you are broke. You are from a wealthy home. Ask your father, Terry Waya, to give you money to help those people. You have not even mentioned the massacre before now.”
One added:
“Kiddwaya didn’t even acknowledge the Benue killings until now, and the first thing he does is drop an account number. This is the problem with rich kids who lack empathy but want PR points.”
Some others accused him of exploiting the tragedy for publicity, while a few defended his effort as a way to drive public support.
The backlash comes amid national mourning and frustration over the recurring killings in Benue State.
