Former federal lawmaker Senator Shehu Sani has condemned the brutal mob killing of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Rano Division in Kano State, describing it as a heinous crime that must not go unpunished.
In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, Sani lamented the tragic death of the officer, who he said was murdered while carrying out his duty.
“I briefly watched the video of the brutal murder of the DPO of Rano Police Station in Kano State by a mob. They tortured and butchered the police officer to death for performing his duty. He was said to have left behind a wife and four children. That despicable crime must not go unpunished. The perpetrators in that footage must all be brought to book. May his soul rest in peace,” Sani wrote.
The incident, which occurred on May 25 in Rano Local Government Area, followed the arrest of a motorcycle mechanic Abdullahi Musa alleged to be riding recklessly under the influence of substances. According to the Kano State Police Command, Musa showed signs of weakness while in custody and was rushed to Rano General Hospital, where he died the following morning.
The death sparked outrage, with miscreants attacking the Rano Police Division, setting parts of the station and two vehicles ablaze, and vandalising 10 others. The DPO, who was severely injured during the attack, succumbed to his injuries at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Kano State Police Command spokesperson Abdullahi Kiyawa confirmed the arrest of 27 suspects in connection with the violence.
Commissioner of police in Kano State Ibrahim Bakori visited the scene and assured the public of a comprehensive investigation to bring the culprits to justice.
The command described the deceased DPO as a gallant officer who paid the supreme price in the line of duty. It also called on residents to remain calm and cooperate with the ongoing investigation, reiterating its commitment to maintaining peace and public order.
