A magistrate court in Kano has directed two well-known TikTokers, Ashiru Idris, popularly called Mai Wushirya, and Basira Yar Guda, to get married within 60 days.

The order, issued on Monday by Magistrate Halima Wali, came after a series of viral videos showing the pair in what authorities described as “indecent” romantic scenes. The Kano State Films and Video Censorship Board had petitioned the court, saying the videos violated moral and religious standards in the state.

In her ruling, Magistrate Wali instructed the Hisbah Board to oversee the marriage arrangements between the two creators. She also warned that failing to carry out the directive within the specified period would amount to contempt of court.

The chairman of the Kano censorship board was further directed to monitor the enforcement of the marriage order.

The decision has stirred widespread debate across Kano. Many residents see it as a moral corrective aligned with the state’s Islamic values. In contrast, others view it as an overreach that infringes on personal rights and sets a troubling precedent.

The case stems from earlier charges against the two for producing and distributing what officials called obscene online content. The censorship board claimed the videos breached state laws that ban sexually suggestive or explicit material.

Mai Wushirya was previously remanded in a correctional centre after being accused of promoting immoral behaviour through his skits, while Yar Guda was questioned by the board’s enforcement officers before the case reached court.

In recent months, Kano authorities have stepped up actions against social media influencers, skit makers, and musicians accused of spreading indecent material or flouting the state’s censorship laws.
