Doyin Okupe, a renowned Nigerian physician, politician and former presidential aide, has died at the age of 72.
Sources link his death to cancer, following a prolonged battle with the illness.
He was said to have been critically ill in the weeks leading up to his death, raising concerns among his loved ones and supporters.
In October 2023, it was reported that Okupe had been hospitalised with prostate cancer and flown to Israel for advanced treatment. Despite medical efforts, his condition failed to improve as hoped.
He was first diagnosed with prostate cancer 16 years ago and later developed sarcoma in his right shoulder, compounding his health challenges.
Okupe served in various capacities, including as a senior aide to former presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan.
He was the director-general of Peter Obi’s Presidential Campaign for the 2023 general elections. He resigned from the Labour Party in 2024 and emerged as a strong advocate for the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
