Jos attack came as surprise after period of peace – Mutfwang

Caleb Mutfwang

Governor of Plateau State Caleb Mutfwang has said the recent attack on Jos South Local Government Area came as a surprise.

Governor Mutfwang spoke during an interview on Arise Television on Wednesday while reacting to the killing of residents on Palm Sunday.

He said the state had experienced calm in the past months, especially in Jos.

“The recent attacks in Plateau came as a surprise. We had attained a level of peace,” he said.

“Over the last 10 to 11 months, we had peace, particularly in the city of Jos.”

The governor said the government had described Jos as one of the safest cities in northern Nigeria, adding that the attack was not expected.

“We said Jos was the safest city in northern Nigeria. We did not anticipate the attack,” he said.

He said the incident has shown the need to improve vigilance and response.

“We need to step up our vigilance. We need to step up our intelligence gathering. We need to step up in terms of response,” he said.

Mutfwang added that gaps had been identified and efforts would be made to address them, while communities would be encouraged to improve preparedness.
