All Progressives Congress chieftain Joe Igbokwe has criticised actress Rita Edochie for urging the Federal Government to release the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu.
In a post on her Instagram page on Monday night, Mrs Edochie appealed to President Bola Tinubu’s administration to free Kanu, saying his release would help restore peace in the South-East.
She said Kanu was “too unique to be in captivity,” adding that “everything he said from the beginning to the very end has happened.”
According to her, continued detention of the IPOB leader fuels agitation and discontent in the region.
But Mr Igbokwe, in a post on Facebook on Tuesday, dismissed her position.
“I just read Mrs Rita Edochie’s plea for Nnamdi Kanu’s freedom and I feel like vomiting. Maybe she did not know what happened in the South-East from 2015 to 2025. This is unbelievable. Mama biko nakpuo be ji. Okwua kariri gi. Alu melu,” he wrote.
Igbokwe, a consistent critic of IPOB, argued that Edochie’s remarks overlooked violence and instability linked to the group’s activities in the last decade.
Nnamdi Kanu, who fled Nigeria in 2017, was re-arrested in 2021 and has since remained in detention while facing terrorism-related charges.
His trial continues to draw debate, with some groups and individuals calling for his release and others opposing it.
