Politician and former special adviser to the Lagos State governor on environment and water resources, Joe Igbokwe, has stirred controversy with a statement accusing people from the South East of being responsible for the killings, violence and destruction in the region.
In a post shared on his Facebook page on Thursday, Mr Igbokwe condemned the repeated blame placed on Fulani herdsmen for killings in the South East, stating that the perpetrators are in fact Igbos themselves.
“The blatant and pathological lies about the killings and destruction in the South East can no longer stand,” he wrote.
“It is Igbo killing Igbo, it is Igbo destroying Igboland and put the blame on Hausa/Fulani herdsmen. This is not our culture. This is sad.”
His comment comes amid continued unrest in parts of the South East, where attacks on government institutions, security personnel and civilians have raised concerns about rising insecurity.
While various groups have pointed fingers at external forces and bandits, others, including Igbokwe, argue that internal sabotage is to blame.
The post has sparked mixed reactions online, with some supporting his call for introspection within the region, while others accuse him of being insensitive and playing into divisive narratives.
Igbokwe, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has been known for his outspoken criticism of separatist movements and insecurity in the South East.
