Writer Jide Taiwo has released a new book on Fuji legend Wasiu Ayinde, popularly known as KWAM 1 or K1 De Ultimate.
The book titled K1 De Ultimate: A Legacy Secured documents the life, artistry and impact of the Fuji maestro who has dominated the genre for more than four decades.
“Some people make hits. Some make headlines, while others make history. K1 De Ultimate has done all three. This book is my way of documenting the remarkable career of the subject, while also exploring how Fuji music became a mirror for society and a soundtrack for generations,” Taiwo said.
He added: “The world currently loves Afrobeats, but to understand where it came from, you need to understand Fuji.”
Taiwo, who previously authored History Made: The Most Important Nigerian Songs Since 1999 and E File Fun Burna: The Incredible Stagecraft of Burna Boy, said his latest work goes beyond biography. It is also a cultural study of how KWAM 1’s music shaped society and preserved heritage.
Over the years, KWAM 1 has modernised Fuji by blending contemporary sounds with traditional rhythms, paving the way for younger acts and influencing Nigerian music.
Outside music, the 67-year-old has received several titles, including Mayegun of Yorubaland, conferred by the late Alaafin of Oyo in 2020.
In August, KWAM 1 made headlines after a clash with airport staff in Abuja. The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) accused him of attempting to board with a liquid substance and spilling it on a worker, leading to his removal from a ValueJet flight. Aviation minister Festus Keyamo ordered his name placed on a no-fly list.
The matter was later resolved after interventions from stakeholders, with both parties said to have reached an amicable settlement.
