Actor Jamiu Azeez has reacted to online reports claiming he converted from Islam to Christianity after celebrating the New Year at a white garment church service.
The 40-year-old shared a video on social media showing himself dressed in white at the church crossover service. The clip quickly circulated online, with many people saying it showed he had changed his religion. Some critics even told him to change his name because he is known as a Muslim.
In response, Jamiu addressed the reports on Instagram, saying the reaction has been extreme and personal. He wrote:
“It’s only in Nigeria that people are so bothered about another person’s life. Imagine telling a man in his 40s how to live his life. I posted myself in a White Garment on the Cross Over night, and, man, the comments I have been reading in blogs, especially on Facebook, are crãzy. Some even came to my DM to drag me, like bro, you will not be accountable for my life, oo. I can choose to practice any religion, and that should not be anyone’s problem. I never even come out to say I have converted oo. Una wan kpai me. No worry, I go wear Babalowo cloth tomorrow.”
Jamiu added that people should not judge his life choices and that he has the right to practise any faith he chooses. His comments highlight a wider conversation online about how public figures are often scrutinized for participating in religious spaces that differ from what people expect.
As of now, Jamiu Azeez has not made any formal statement about leaving Islam or joining another religion.
