Paul Ibe, media aide to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has described a video circulating online in which ex-VP Atiku appears to promise a giveaway as a scam.
In the video, which appears to be generated using artificial intelligence, a voice resembling Atiku’s says, “I will be giving massive giveaways this month and selecting people at random as a way of showing support to every average Nigerian out there, as a way of supporting those who believe in a better tomorrow. Simply drop your details and sign up.”
Reacting on Facebook on Wednesday, Mr. Ibe distanced Atiku from the video and warned Nigerians not to engage with the scheme.
He wrote, “His Excellency Atiku Abubakar, former Vice President of Nigeria and chieftain of the African Democratic Congress believes in a better Nigeria.
“To this end, he is working with others who believe in and are committed to the Nigeria of our dream. However, we wish to alert Nigerians that this scheme is a ‘wayo’ (scam).
“Don’t fall for it. Their plan is to extort your hard-earned money and compromise your data. Kindly ignore, please.”
Ibe urged members of the public to disregard the message, adding that Atiku is not behind any such giveaway.
