Olubadan of Ibadanland Oba Rashidi Ladoja has clarified that he did not intentionally snub the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, during a recent interfaith gathering in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Addressing journalists, Oba Ladoja said the incident, which circulated on social media, had been misinterpreted.
He explained that his actions were guided by circumstances rather than disrespect.
“There was no intention whatsoever. What happened was not deliberate. It has been misinterpreted, especially on social media,” he said.
The monarch said he arrived late at the event and was trying to reach his seat without disrupting the programme.
He added that his seat was located between designated zones, requiring him to pass through sections of the seats and that by the time he returned, other dignitaries had already moved.
“My seat was sandwiched between Soun and Alaafin. I had to pass through some people to get there. I didn’t make any decision to avoid or ignore anyone,” he said.
Ladoja also said communication had been made between the two palaces and dismissed claims of tension or offence.
“I don’t think anyone was being offensive, and I don’t see the issue as an insult to anybody,” he said.
The Olubadan called for peace and unity in Yorubaland, particularly among younger generations.
“My goal is to unite the present generation and those coming after us. We must raise standards and focus on what truly brings progress to our society,” he added.
The incident occurred on Monday at the interfaith gathering organised by the Oyo State Government at the Grand Space near the Oyo State House of Assembly.
A video circulated on social media showed the Olubadan not responding to the Alaafin’s outstretched hand, prompting discussions on protocol and hierarchy among traditional rulers.
While some commentators questioned the interaction, others called for dialogue between the traditional rulers to maintain harmony within Yoruba institutions.
