INEC moves Kogi, Balyelsa governorship polls to November 16

INEC chairman Mahmood Yakubu

Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced a shift in date for governorship elections in Kogi and Bayelsa States.

The commission on Thursday announced that the elections earlier scheduled for November 2 would now be held on November 16.

Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson, had earlier written to INEC to shift the date on the basis that November 2 is celebrated as Thanksgiving Day in the state.

A statement by INEC spokesman, Festus Okoye, said the decision was taken “after a careful consideration of the appeals” during the commission’s regular weekly meeting held on Thursday.

Bayelsa State Deputy Governor, Gboribiogha Jonah, had on Tuesday led Bayelsa stakeholders on a courtesy visit to INEC chairman, Prof. Mahmoud Yakubu, to demand an adjustment in the date of the governorship election.

The Thanksgiving Day, they said, is backed by law.
