Kunle Kuti, son of the late Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, has spoken on the ongoing online clash involving his younger brother, Seun Kuti, and singer Wizkid.
Speaking as a guest on The Cable, Kunle said he was saddened by the frequent comparisons between Wizkid and his late father, describing the trend as unnecessary and unfair. He said both artistes should be appreciated for their individual identities and contributions to music.
Kunle, who is Fela’s second son, described himself as a devoted admirer of Wizkid, saying the Grammy Award winner is the only artiste he has ever made a personal effort to meet. He disclosed that he even pleaded with Wizkid’s manager, Sunday Are, just to get the chance to meet the singer.
He also addressed Wizkid’s tattoo of Fela, noting that unlike his brother Seun, the gesture deepened his admiration for the artiste. According to him, none of Fela’s children, including himself, has their father’s image tattooed on their body.
In his words, “I don’t want anyone comparing Wizkid to Fela. I’m Wizkid’s biggest fan. He’s the only artist I’ve ever begged people to let me meet in my life. I even begged his manager, Sunday Are, just to meet him. The fact that he has Fela’s tattoo on his body, even us, Fela’s own children, don’t have Fela’s tattoo.”
Kunle’s comments come amid a public exchange between Wizkid and Seun Kuti that played out on social media.
