I’m fit as a fiddle, Akpabio dismisses rumours of ill health on return from London

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has returned to Nigeria from London, putting to rest speculation about his health.

Akpabio arrived at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, at about 4am on Monday where he was received at the Presidential Wing by senators, aides and supporters.

His return follows social media reports alleging that he was critically ill and admitted to a hospital in London.

Addressing journalists on arrival, Akpabio dismissed the claims, describing them as unfounded.

“There’s nothing like such. I’m fit as a fiddle. I only stopped over in London for a short vacation,” he said.

The former Akwa Ibom governor had attended the Sixth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament in Geneva from July 29 to 31, after which he travelled to London for what he described as rest following a “hectic legislative year.”

Akpabio assured Nigerians that the Senate would resume with “robust legislative engagements” and emphasised the importance of Nigeria’s strong delegation to the International Parliamentary Union in Geneva.

He said the participation would translate into greater democratic dividends and stronger collaboration between the legislature and other arms of government.

Godswill Akpabio assumed office as Nigeria’s Senate president in June 2023.

In recent months, he has been in the news over allegations of sexual harassment made against him by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, which he has denied.
