Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu has inaugurated an eight-member committee to oversee the implementation of state police and advance his policing plan.
IGP Disu announced the committee on Wednesday during his first meeting with senior officers of the Nigeria Police Force, days after his confirmation as the 23rd indigenous Inspector-General of Police.
His appointment was ratified by the Nigeria Police Council, paving the way for his swearing-in by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa.
Professor Olu Ogunsakin was appointed to head the committee.
Addressing senior officers, Disu said leadership is about responsibility.
He stated that professionalism, discipline and accountability must guide police operations across the country. He added that authority must be exercised with restraint and that respect for human rights is essential.
“Every Nigerian deserves to be treated with dignity, fairness and justice, regardless of status or background,” he said.
Disu also announced plans to strengthen internal oversight. He directed that the Public Complaint Unit and the X-Squad operate independently.
On decentralisation, he said state police would allow different levels of government to take part in addressing security issues.
The move follows the Federal Government’s renewed support for the creation of state police as part of broader security reforms.
Tunji Disu was appointed acting Inspector-General on February 24, following the resignation of former IGP Kayode Egbetokun.
