Former governors James Ibori, Donald Duke and Niyi Adebayo were among those who attended the thanksgiving service held in Lagos on Sunday in honour of businessman and chairman of the Ibru Organisation, Oskar Ibru, who died at 67.

Family members, friends, business associates and public figures were present at the event.

Actress Elvina Ibru, sister of the late industrialist, was also in attendance.

The gathering drew governors, former governors and ministers.

The family announced a schedule of events to honour Mr Ibru’s life and contributions to business, culture and philanthropy.

The ceremonies will take place in Lagos and Delta States between November 20 and November 30.

According to the programme, activities began with a Service of Songs in Lagos on Thursday, November 20, followed by a Church Service on Friday, November 21.

The celebrations will then move to Delta State, where another Service of Songs will be held on Wednesday, November 26, ahead of the Funeral Service on Thursday, November 27.

The rites will conclude with an Outing Service on Sunday, November 30.

Oskar Ibru, born on August 11, 1958, held several traditional titles, including the Ochuko R’Ovie of Agbarha-Otor Kingdom, Odomese of Olomu Kingdom, Onekirode of Effurun-Otor Kingdom and the Otunba Boyejo of Ijebu, being the first non-indigene to receive that honour.

A member of the Ibru family, he was known for his leadership in commerce, his philanthropic initiatives and his involvement in cultural activities.

His family said he died after a brief illness but did not disclose further details.

Ibru was one of the heirs of the Ibru dynasty founded by his father, Michael Ibru, who died in 2016.

He contributed to sustaining and expanding the conglomerate’s interests in shipping, oil and gas, real estate and commerce.

Under his leadership, the group maintained its presence in Nigeria’s corporate sector and supported philanthropic and cultural engagements.

His death follows earlier losses within the family, including that of its patriarch, Michael Ibru.
