Ibadan markets shut as traders honour coronation of new Olubadan Ladoja

Rashidi Ladoja

Major markets across Ibadan, Oyo State, have been shut on Friday as traders honoured the coronation of the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, Arusa I.

At Dugbe, Agbeni and Orita Merin Mapo markets, shops were locked and commercial activities suspended.

A similar situation was observed at Agodi Gate, Oje, Bere and Bodija markets.

Only liquor sellers around the markets operated, selling alcoholic drinks to commercial motorcyclists.

The Babaloja general of Oyo State, Yekeen Abass, directed the closure, describing it as a mark of respect for the new monarch.

He said markets across the 11 local government areas of Ibadanland, including those in the city centre and surrounding areas, would not open for the day.

Mr Abass also urged traders to attend the coronation ceremony at Mapo Hall.

He extended birthday wishes to Oba Ladoja, praying for good health and long life for the monarch.

The coronation is being held at Mapo Hall, a colonial-era city hall commissioned in 1929 by Captain Ross.

The venue has hosted several major political and social events in Nigeria’s history.

It also houses a mini museum with relics, including chains once used on tax evaders and portraits of all past Olubadans.

Mapo Hill, where the hall is located, is one of the oldest parts of Ibadan and remains home to many indigenes of the city.

Dignitaries expected at the event include President Bola Tinubu, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, ministers, governors and other prominent figures.

Already seated at Mapo Hall are the Alaafin of Oyo Oba Abimbola Owoade, Ladoja’s wife Mutiat Ladoja and two former governors of Ogun State, Gbenga Daniel and Senator Ibikunle Amosun.
