I wasn’t mentally prepared for this, Vee speaks on marriage pressure at 30

Former Big Brother Naija housemate and actress Vee Iye has spoken about the pressure she faces over marriage and life expectations as she turns 30.

In a video shared on her TikTok page, Vee said she was surprised by the number of conversations triggered by her age. She noted that people, including friends she had not spoken to in a long time, now feel entitled to ask about her marital status.

“Nobody ever mentally prepared me for the amount of conversations I would have as a woman turning 30 this year,” she said.

Vee recalled a recent phone call from a married friend who quickly asked when she planned to get married, without asking about her work or wellbeing. She said such interactions reflect how society often places marriage above other aspects of a woman’s life.

According to her, the constant focus on marriage ignores personal growth, career goals and individual circumstances. She added that while she would like to get married and have children someday, those things are not entirely within her control.

Vee said she is currently focused on her career and taking life at her own pace, especially given the present economic realities. She stressed the importance of making personal choices without pressure or comparison.

The singer and actress has previously spoken about prioritising her happiness and avoiding rushed or unhealthy relationships. She rose to prominence after appearing on Big Brother Naija and has since pursued work in music, acting and media.

Her comments add to ongoing conversations about societal pressure on women in Nigeria to marry by a certain age.
