Miss Universe Nigeria, Onyinyechi Basil, has returned home after representing Nigeria at the 74th Miss Universe competition in Bangkok, Thailand.

At a welcome back event in Lagos, she spoke about her experience and what it taught her about purpose and representation on the global stage.

Basil said her time at the pageant was not just about competing for a crown but about showing the world who Nigerians are. “I wanted the world to see that Nigerians are not just beautiful on the outside, but deeply kind within,” she said, reflecting on her journey and the people she met.

The 25-year-old was crowned Miss Universe Nigeria in August after competing against 22 contestants in Lagos. She represented the country at the global competition in Thailand, where over 120 contestants from different countries took part.

Speaking at the reception, Basil shared moments from the competition that tested her resilience and strengthened her confidence. She spoke about the long days, tight schedules and pressure that came with the experience. “You can prepare mentally,” she said, “but it’s another thing entirely to live it.”

Although she did not win the Miss Universe title, Basil said she was proud to showcase Nigerian culture throughout the competition. She highlighted the opportunity to share stories from home, connect with other contestants and represent the diversity of Nigeria on a global platform.

She also spoke about transparency in international pageants, noting that the Miss Universe contest she grew up watching felt more open. She stressed that she holds respect for all the contestants who participated.

Reflecting on the lessons from the experience, Basil said, “Beauty isn’t just skin deep. It’s in how you show up for others, how you use your platform, and the kindness you extend even in small ways.”

Following her return, Basil said she plans to focus more on her advocacy work. She is known for the Reach Moms Initiative, which aims to improve access to maternal healthcare for women in underserved communities. She also said education remains an area she hopes to support, particularly for children affected by limited resources.

She encouraged young Nigerian women to believe in themselves and pursue their goals with intention. “Never doubt yourself. Be intentional. If you can think it, you can achieve it,” she said.

Basil added that her goal is to make a lasting impact that goes beyond her reign as Miss Universe Nigeria.
